Trip to Canada
Destination visited: Canada and Greenland
Activities included: Birdwatching, Canoeing, Hiking/Trekking, Sea Kayaking, Walking
I travelled with one other person to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was the last week of June and there were so many things going on we never had a chance to get bored. There were the Benson and Hedges Symphony of Fire; international fireworks competition, the Gay Pride Week; different festivities each day of the week, and the du Maurier’ Jazz Festival.
Drove from Erie, Pennsylvania to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The drive took about 3.5 hours and we had only the usual breaks and a stop at customs at the United States/Canada border.
Theatre is a must, there are many shows and plays including the famous Phantom of the Opera. You’ll never tire of dining out at the many different typed of cuisine available to you in the “cities within the city”. The shopping is incredible, from the upper crust in the Bloor/Yorkville area, the “eclectic” tastes on Queen Street West and the wide variety of shops that go up and down on Younge Street, which, by the way, is the longest street in the world! If you don’t catch a Bluejay’s game you can still take a tour of the incredible skydome and see the city and beyond from the top of the CN Tower.
I went the last week of June and the weather was great but it was very hot (80-90F) during the day in the city unless you went down to the Harborfront and caught the breeze coming off of Lake Ontario. During the night the weather was just perfect (70-80F), nice for an evening stroll or an evening on the town at one of Toronto’s many nightclubs. I parked the car at the hotel and took either a cab (fairly inexpensive), a trolly, the bus, or the subway. You don’t really need your car to get around this city, plus you have the added advantage of relaxing and not having to find a parking place in this big city.
Make sure to have comfortable shoes, as you’ll probably do a lot of walking (it’s the best way to get around). The people of Toronto are very friendly so you’ll probably make a friend or two along the way!
