Trip to Grand Cayman
Destination visited: Cayman Islands
Activities included: Birdwatching, Horseback Riding, Scuba Diving, Walking
Flew from Detroit to Memphis to Miami to Grand Cayman. First we were delayed in Detroit and felt we might miss our connection in Memphis. We just made that with 10 minutes to spare then on to Miami then to Grand Cayman. Our travel agent had just tripped on the resort Spanish Bay Reef so we were off to test it.
We had no itinery. This was our first trip together without our daught who was 12 at the time. Our only plans were to scuba dive and relax.
Spanish Bay Reef turned out to be perfect and all inclusive, including ALL beverages. Since this is a marine park we had unlimited shore diving with all equipment supplied at no additional cost. This resort also has a sister resort on Seven Mile Beach if you want crowds and sandy beaches.
The people were generous and friendly. The food was plentiful and great with a different theme every night. Even though it was buffet style we had waiters filling our drinks and clearing plates constantly. The diving there is terriffic. One minute you can be at 15′ and the next 60′. If you go out 75 yards farther you can literally drop to 6000 feet. Our room was actually a small efficiency apartment looking out at the ocean. We kept holding our breaths waiting for the bomb to fall since the previous year we had traveled to Cancun and had the “vacation from hell”. While at the resort we met numerous people from all over the world. The best part was everyone was so laid back, no putting on airs. We still correspond with one couple from Ireland and plan to get together this year. If you like quiet and to be away from the crowd you don’t have to shuttle down to the sister hotel. They have bikes and jeeps available so you can go into town or to the Turtle Farm or to Hell. We had such a great time we went back in 1999 (Feb) and again experienced no surprises as they say. The staff there remembered us and they will go out of the way to make your stay pleasant.
As a traveler who has experienced Montezuma’s Revenge I was please to not have to worry about the food or the water. Also the islanders speak English and are truly glad to have the tourists there. Another plus is that there is almost NO crime on the island. Many times we left our room unlocked and items outside with no problems.
